Former NMSP police officer was charged with sexual assault, receives case dismissal in Las Vegas, NM. Now on the road to recertification.

GRANT, NM – Our team is pleased to announce that the charges of sexual assault that were brought up against Isaiah Cheromiah, a former New Mexico State Police officer, have been dismissed. During the trial an expert witness of the prosecution deemed the alleged victim’s claim lacks credibility. The allegations, which first surfaced in May 2022, accused Cheromiah of committing sexual assault while the accuser was asleep after a night of social drinking. At the time of the incident, Cheromiah was still an officer with the Grant Police department.

Cheromiah was then placed on administrative leave from the Grant Police Department upon the initial accusations. But he later joined the New Mexico State Police in November. Isaiah Cheromiah faced significant career setbacks following his arrest in July 2022, including being stripped of his law enforcement certification. The recent dismissal of charges marks a major turning point for Cheromiah, attributing in part to evidence undermining the credibility of the alleged victim, and he is now working towards rebuilding his career.

Cheromiah’s criminal defense attorney, Lizzy Bunker, remarked on the profound impact the dismissal has on her client’s life and outlook. “I do think once the dismissal got filed, I saw him reignite his excitement for life, and just his ability to get re-certified and move on with things,” said Lizzy.

This is a testament to the important role an criminal defense lawyer can play in the outcome of your case.
